Establishing an even, healthy stand begins with selecting the right seeding rate for your conditions. Pioneer® research shows that optimal rates vary based on seed size, seeds per pound, and seedbed conditions. The charts below provide recommended seeding rates for both spring and winter canola to help you achieve your target plant population and maximize yield potential. Use these guidelines to fine-tune your seeding plan and set your crop up for a uniform, vigorous start.
The following chart is provided as a guideline only. Experienced growers may have developed rates outside of these ranges that are well-suited to their seedbed conditions.
To determine your seeding rate use the chart below:
IDEAL SEEDBED: firm, moist, weed-free soil at 50° F or above, seeds planted shallow.
POOR SEEDBED: loose, lumpy, overly wet or dry soil, below 40° F, high weed competition.
| Seeds Per Pound | YOUR SEEDBED CONDITIONS | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Ideal 400,000 sds/A. | Normal 435,000 sds/A. | Poor 450,000 sds/A. | |
| SEEDING RATE (LBS/A) | |||
| From 135,000 to 115,000 | 3.5 | 3.7 | 3.9 |
| From 115,000 to 100,000 | 4.0 | 4.3 | 4.5 |
| From 100,000 to 90,000 | 4.4 | 4.8 | 5.0 |
| From 90,000 to 80,000 | 5.0 | 5.4 | 5.6 |
| From 80,000 to 70,000 | 5.7 | 6.2 | 6.4 |
| 70,000 or less | 6.6 | 7.25 | 7.5 |
